Who We Serve
The EWBGCP Chapter was founded in May of 2006 in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. We are devoted towards partnering with developing communities to improve their quality of life through the implementation of environmentally sustainable, equitable, and economical engineering projects.
Regional Connection to Rwanda: The Cincinnati-Dayton area has more Rwandan immigrants than any other region in the United States.
The Republic of Rwanda is slightly smaller than the US state of Massachusetts or half the size of Scotland, is located near the center of Africa, a few
degrees south of the Equator. The capital, Kigali, is located in the center of the country.
The divide between the Congo and Nile drainage systems extends from north to south through western Rwanda at an average elevation of almost 9,000 feet.
On the western slopes of this ridgeline, the land slopes abruptly toward Lake Kivu and the Ruzizi River valley, and constitutes part of the Great Rift Valley. This western section of the country lies within the Albertine Rift montane forests ecoregion.
The eastern slopes are more moderate, with rolling hills extending across central uplands at gradually reducing altitudes, to the plains, swamps, and lakes of the eastern border region. Therefore the country is also fondly known as "Land of a Thousand Hills" (Pays des mille collines). [Wikipedia]
Muhororo is a small village in north-central Rwanda. One of the unfortunate outcomes of the Rwandan Genocides, was the amount of orphaned children that emerged. There are three orphanages in Muhororo, housing over 200 children (nearly 14% of the village's population).
Everyone Deserves Clean Water. Due to its geographical location the area is susceptible to frequent droughts. This impacts the region's drinking water, bathing, livestock and agricultural needs. EWBGCP has been working to improve the distribution of clean water to the members of the community.
Our sustainable engineering project goals are to:
- Host communities' projects
- Host community initiative & contributions
- Engage community ownership & operation
- Enhance community skills related to the projects
